What is a radical? What is a character component? What&#8217;s the difference between the two? Thus, we can say that \u597d (h\u01ceo), &#8220;good&#8221;, has two components, and that \u60f3 (xi\u01ceng), &#8220;to think&#8221;, also has two components, although one of them is a compound in itself. With this broad definition, there is no definitive list of all character components. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/learning-chinese-characters\/\">Each component can have one or more functions, so might for example provide information about sound, meaning or both<\/a>. For example, in \u597d, both \u5973 (n\u01da), &#8220;woman&#8221;, and \u5b50 (z\u01d0) &#8220;child; son&#8221;, indicate meaning. In \u60f3, the top part \u76f8 (xi\u00e0ng), &#8220;appearance&#8221;, indicates the sound and the bottom part \u5fc3 (x\u012bn), &#8220;heart&#8221;, indicates the meaning. Some components have no function and are the result of character evolution and corruption over thousands of years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A radical<\/strong> is a character component with a very specific function, namely to index that character in a dictionary to make it easier to find. Each character has one and only one radical. There are different lists of radicals used in different periods and regions, but the most widely used one today is the 214\u00a0 \u5eb7\u7199 (K\u0101ngx\u012b) radicals.\u00a0 It&#8217;s important to note that which component is the radical was decided long after the characters were created and don&#8217;t tell us much about the other functions that the component might have.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some characters:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>\u77e5 (zh\u012b),<\/strong> &#8220;to know&#8221;, contains two functional components: \u77e2 (sh\u01d0), &#8220;arrow&#8221;, and \u53e3 (k\u01d2u), &#8220;mouth&#8221;. The first gives the sound (similar initial, same final, different tone) and the second gives the meaning (presumably knowledge is transmitted by speaking).<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u6263 (k\u00f2u),<\/strong> &#8220;to fasten&#8221;, also consists of two functional components: \u624c, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/shapeshifting-chinese-characters\/\">a variant of<\/a> \u624b (sh\u01d2u), &#8220;hand&#8221;, and \u53e3 (k\u01d2u), &#8220;mouth&#8221;. It&#8217;s not surprising that the first is related to the meaning of the character (fastening something with your hand) and that the second is related to the pronunciation (only the tone is different).<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u548c (h\u00e9),<\/strong> &#8220;and&#8221;, also has two components: \u79be (h\u00e9), &#8220;grain&#8221;, and \u53e3 (k\u01d2u). Here, it&#8217;s also easy to see that the first is a sound component (identical pronunciation) and the second is a semantic component (the original meaning of this character is &#8220;to mediate&#8221;, which is a verbal activity).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"5666FXjn5E\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/shapeshifting-chinese-characters\/\">Shapeshifting Chinese characters<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Shapeshifting Chinese characters&#8221; &#8212; Hacking Chinese\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/shapeshifting-chinese-characters\/embed\/#?secret=498PsaDHp3#?secret=5666FXjn5E\" data-secret=\"5666FXjn5E\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So, can you guess which component is the radical in each character?<\/p>\n<p>No, you can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, radicals have nothing to do with the function of the components and were instead invented to make it possible to index characters in dictionaries. Here are the answers:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>\u77e5 (zh\u012b),<\/strong> &#8220;to know&#8221;, the radical is \u77e2, a phonetic component on the left.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u6263 (k\u00f2u),<\/strong> &#8220;to fasten&#8221;, the radical is \u624c, a semantic component on the left.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u548c (h\u00e9),<\/strong> &#8220;and&#8221;, the radical is \u53e3, a semantic component on the right.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That being said, the radical is\u00a0<em>often\u00a0<\/em>a semantic component on the left, but as I have just shown, this is far from always the case. The main takeaway here is that &#8220;radical&#8221; is a role that a component plays in a specific character. \u53e3 is in all three characters above, but it&#8217;s only the radical in one of them.<\/p>\n<h3>So why are we still talking about radicals then?<\/h3>\n<p>That&#8217;s a great question! The answer is that we shouldn&#8217;t; there is no reason to learn which component plays the role of radical in a compound and there&#8217;s no inherent value in learning a list of radicals. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/how-to-look-up-chinese-characters-you-dont-know\/\">You need that information to look up unknown characters<\/a> in a paper dictionary, but this is a completely obsolete skill for most students.<\/p>\n<p>So why do people talk so much about radicals, then? And why is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/kickstart-your-character-learning-with-the-100-most-common-radicals\/\">Kickstart your Chinese character learning with the 100 most common radicals<\/a> one of the most popular articles on Hacking Chinese?<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"brf0dk08gy\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/kickstart-your-character-learning-with-the-100-most-common-radicals\/\">Kickstart your Chinese character learning with the 100 most common radicals<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Kickstart your Chinese character learning with the 100 most common radicals&#8221; &#8212; Hacking Chinese\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/kickstart-your-character-learning-with-the-100-most-common-radicals\/embed\/#?secret=FyySdKlXOy#?secret=brf0dk08gy\" data-secret=\"brf0dk08gy\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The reason is practical: Most people don&#8217;t understand what radicals are and confuse them with character components. You will hear people say that a character consists of these two radicals, or they want to learn the most common radicals because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/the-building-blocks-of-chinese-part-1-chinese-characters-and-words-in-a-nutshell\/\">they realise that learning the building blocks of characters is very important<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If I want to reach normal students and teachers, I need to include the word &#8220;radical&#8221;, because 99% of the time, students who say &#8220;radical&#8221; actually mean &#8220;character component&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3>Learning radicals is useful, but not because they are radicals<\/h3>\n<p>That being said, learning common radicals is still useful, not because they are radicals, but because they also happen to be common semantic components. Learning which component is the radical in a specific character is useless in a modern setting, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/why-you-should-think-of-characters-in-terms-of-functional-components\/\">but learning about the function of each component is very useful<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/kickstart-your-character-learning-with-the-100-most-common-radicals\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-16576 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/radicals-red-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thus, a list of the most common radicals is a convenient way to access common character components and reach many students who will benefit from that list at the same time. That list overlaps with a potential list of semantic components to a fairly high degree, but there are of course many common character components that are never used as radicals.<\/p>\n<p>The reason <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/kickstart-your-character-learning-with-the-100-most-common-radicals\/\">Kickstart your Chinese character learning with the 100 most common radicals<\/a> is so popular is that I took the time to look at only the most important ones, based only on the most common characters. This means that you can safely learn anything on that list and be sure that it will be useful either immediately or very soon. This is certainly not true if you learn all the 214 components that can serve as radicals.<\/p>\n<h3>Chinese characters with the same components but different radicals<\/h3>\n<p>Before we move to the question of pronunciation, let&#8217;s look at one final example that should illustrate why &#8220;radical&#8221; is not a very useful concept. Some characters have the same components but not the same radical. Here&#8217;s one example of that, fetched from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/chinese-characters-components-different-meanings\/\">my article about characters with the same components<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u5446 (d\u0101i) &#8220;dull, stupid&#8221; &#8211; the radical is \u53e3<\/li>\n<li>\u674f (x\u00ecng) &#8220;almond; apricot&#8221; &#8211; the radical is \u6728<span class=\"_5yl5\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I hope it&#8217;s clear by now what the difference between a radical and a character component is. Let&#8217;s move on!<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ki4PkNTmng\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/chinese-characters-components-different-meanings\/\">Chinese characters that share the same components but are still different<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Chinese characters that share the same components but are still different&#8221; &#8212; Hacking Chinese\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/chinese-characters-components-different-meanings\/embed\/#?secret=IFpzP74PZA#?secret=ki4PkNTmng\" data-secret=\"ki4PkNTmng\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Should you learn the pronunciation of radicals?<\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s time to finally answer the original question: Should you learn the pronunciation of radicals? The reason I took so long to get here is that if you&#8217;ve followed my reasoning so far, you already know the answer.<\/p>\n<p>If you used the word &#8220;radical&#8221; correctly when asking the question, the answer is &#8220;no&#8221;, just like the answer to the question if you should learn radicals in general is also &#8220;no&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>However, there&#8217;s an additional reason that learning the pronunciation of radicals is less useful than learning their meaning. It has to do with what I said earlier about radicals often being semantic components. As I said, learning the meaning of radicals can be useful because they are also common semantic components.<\/p>\n<p>The same is not true for pronunciation. Many of the radicals have strange pronunciations that even native speakers don&#8217;t use or even know. What&#8217;s the pronunciation of \u8fb6? How about \u5b80, or \u5f73? The only reason you might want to know that is if you want to type them like I did now.<\/p>\n<p>The radical of a character is rarely the phonetic component, so this information is also unhelpful when trying to learn compounds. Of course, some radicals are also common stand-alone characters like \u4eba, \u706b or \u5c71, but since it can be hard to know which are useful to learn and which are not, I indicated pronunciation you can skip in brackets in my list:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8076\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/kickstart-your-character-learning-with-the-100-most-common-radicals\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8076\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8076\" class=\"wp-image-8076 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/radical-pronunciation.png\" alt=\"Pronunciation of radicals\" width=\"1000\" height=\"762\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/radical-pronunciation.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/radical-pronunciation-300x229.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/radical-pronunciation-768x585.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8076\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Please note that these are the most commonly used radicals. If you look at a complete list sorted by number of strokes, a much larger amount will be useless in terms of how they are pronounced.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Whether or not you should learn the pronunciation of character components in general depends on what component it is. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/phonetic-components-part-1-the-key-to-80-of-all-chinese-characters\/\">More than 80% of all Chinese characters are made up of a semantic (meaning) component and a phonetic (sound) component<\/a>. Learning the pronunciation of common sound components is extremely important! If the component in question is not a common phonetic component, you should only learn it if it also works as a separate character as described above.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How native speakers talk about radicals without using their pronunciation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I said above that most native speakers don&#8217;t know how to pronounce many of the radicals. Try asking Chinese people how to pronounce \u8fb6, \u5b80, or \u5f73\u00a0and you&#8217;ll see what I mean. You are very likely to be told their colloquial names, not how these characters are pronounced individually.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the colloquial names:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u8fb6 = \u8d70\u4e4b\u65c1 (z\u01d2uzh\u012bp\u00e1ng)<\/li>\n<li>\u5b80 = \u5b9d\u76d6\u5934 (b\u01ceog\u00e0it\u00f3u)<\/li>\n<li>\u5f73 = \u53cc\u4eba\u65c1 (shu\u0101ngr\u00e9np\u00e1ng)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/talk-chinese-characters-chinese\/\">Learning these colloquial names is useful if you talk about handwriting with native speakers<\/a>, such as if you want to ask someone how to write a character verbally. For beginners, this is overkill, but for intermediate and advanced learners who care about characters, you should learn the most common ones.
