Interestingly, the most useful words are not the most common ones in the language as a whole, nor those taught in your textbook beyond the first few chapters (you do need basic pronouns and verbs, after all).<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the most frequently used language in lessons and classrooms is that which is directly linked to learning; classroom Chinese, if you will, even though it doesn&#8217;t have to be in a classroom, physical or virtual.<\/p>\n<p>Phrases like \u4e2d\u6587\u600e\u4e48\u8bf4\uff1f (zh\u014dngw\u00e9n z\u011bnme shu\u014d?), &#8220;How do you say [this] in Chinese?&#8221;, or \u8bf7\u518d\u8bf4\u4e00\u6b21 (q\u01d0ng z\u00e0i shu\u014d y\u00ed c\u00ec), &#8220;Please say it again&#8221;, are much more frequently used than phrases such as \u4f60\u559c\u6b22\u5403\u4e2d\u56fd\u83dc\u5417\uff1f (n\u01d0 x\u01d0hu\u0101n ch\u012b zh\u014dnggu\u00f3 c\u00e0i ma?), &#8220;Do you like eating Chinese food?&#8221;, or \u4eca\u5929\u662f\u6211\u7684\u751f\u65e5 (j\u012bnti\u0101n sh\u00ec w\u01d2 de sh\u0113ngr\u00ec), &#8220;Today is my birthday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I have said the former thousands of times as a student, but I think I&#8217;ve never said either of the other two, yet most textbooks teach the latter much earlier than the former.<\/p>\n<h3>Learn whatever Chinese words and phrases you need most often first<\/h3>\n<p>So, the quickest way to immerse yourself is to focus on the most commonly used language first, in the context you&#8217;re in. For most students, this means classroom language.<\/p>\n<p>To make this as easy as possible for both students and teachers, I have compiled a list of the most useful classroom expressions in Chinese. All words and phrases are common in their context, so you can safely learn all of them. Naturally, start with those that you find yourself needing to say or understand the most often.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, I don&#8217;t recommend memorising words or phrases from lists, but this is an exception. Keep a cheat sheet with you so you can check if you forget something. You&#8217;ll find that soon you won&#8217;t need that cheat sheet very often.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s okay not to understand how these phrases work. Learn them as a chunk that has a specific meaning and usage. You don&#8217;t need to know what \u4e2d\u6587, \u600e\u4e48 and \u8bf4 mean individually and how they function grammatically to ask your teacher how to say something in Chinese.<\/p>\n<p>If you get bogged down in details for each phrase, learning the entire list will take you a semester, but if you just commit them to memory as chunks, you can learn them in days.<\/p>\n<p>My list doesn&#8217;t cover everything, mostly because I don&#8217;t know your particular learning situation. If you encounter other expressions that you need to say or understand often, make sure you learn these in Chinese too.<\/p>\n<h3>Teachers: Use the phrases constantly in context<\/h3>\n<p>As a teacher, I suggest that you curate this list to suit your teaching situation. If you&#8217;re teaching online, maybe you need to expand that section, and if you&#8217;re not, it might be a good idea to remove it entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Then make sure to constantly use these expressions in Chinese in lessons and encourage students to do the same. Provide students with cheat sheets or paste important phrases on the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Introduce the expressions gradually when they are needed or when they slot naturally into the flow of a lesson. Constantly model how the phrases are used. Use gestures, point to pictures or refer to a printed version of the phrase list.<\/p>\n<h3>I need your help to collect more useful expressions<\/h3>\n<p>Please help me develop this list further by suggesting additions, deletions or modifications. Every time I want to hand a student a list, I have to make one or adapt one I already have. The same is true for many of my teacher colleagues. This list was created by drawing on all that experience, then trying it out with real students.<\/p>\n<p>To make the list as useful as possible, I have split it into several sections. The goal is to help you choose the right expressions for you, and more importantly, make it easy to ignore things you don&#8217;t need.
