What I portray here is meant to be tongue-in-cheek, poking fun at bad teaching.<\/p>\n<p>However, my goal is not to attack teachers; most do their best and simply don&#8217;t have the education, time or resources to get everything right.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a teacher, you can read this article as a guide for what to do (just reverse the wording for each advice). If you&#8217;re a beginner learning characters yourself, you should probably read this article instead: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/how-to-learn-chinese-characters-as-a-beginner\/\">How to learn Chinese characters as a beginner.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here I present twelve steps to terrible teaching, including links to more information whenever relevant. Teach the names of the strokes, preferably in Chinese<\/h4>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/yong-strokes-300x240.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/yong-strokes-300x240.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/yong-strokes-768x614.png 768w, https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/yong-strokes.png 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/strong>Language learning is all about theoretical, abstract knowledge, so the most important thing is for students to know what things are called, especially the various strokes that all characters are composed of.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t forget to include combinations of strokes, including the rare ones. It doesn&#8217;t really matter if most native speakers don&#8217;t know the names of these; your students definitely should! It&#8217;s important to learn all the stroke names in Chinese, because there are no other words with a higher priority for beginners to learn.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote more about learning stroke names here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/should-you-learn-the-names-of-the-strokes-in-chinese-characters\/\">Should you learn the names of the strokes in Chinese characters?<\/a><br \/>\n<a name=\"2-test-students-on-their-theoretical-knowledge-not-their-practical-skills\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"2-test-students-on-their-theoretical-knowledge-not-their-practical-skills\">2. For example, make sure to include the stroke names in Chinese on the test.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t matter if the students know what the characters mean or how they are used; what matters is that they can name all the strokes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/real-communication-what-it-is-why-you-want-it-and-how-to-get-it\/\">Avoid practical communication and real-world applications whenever possible.<\/a><br \/>\n<a name=\"3-teach-how-to-categorise-characters-according-to-the-practical-and-useful\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"3-teach-how-to-categorise-characters-according-to-the-practical-and-useful\">3. Teach how to categorise characters according to the practical and useful \u516d\u4e66 (\u516d\u66f8)<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/the-building-blocks-of-chinese-part-1-chinese-characters-and-words-in-a-nutshell\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-16708\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/written-chinese-building-blocks-3-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>When you talk about character formation, the best starting point is \u516d\u4e66 (\u516d\u66f8), &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chinese_character_classification#Traditional_classification\">Six Writings<\/a>&#8220;, created roughly two thousand years ago. It&#8217;s particularly important that you expound on the two categories \u5047\u501f, &#8220;rebus characters&#8221;, and \u8f6c\u6ce8 (\u8f49\u6ce8) &#8220;derivative cognates&#8221;, since students will find these very hard to understand when they know nothing about Chinese characters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/the-building-blocks-of-chinese-part-1-chinese-characters-and-words-in-a-nutshell\/\">Avoid approaching characters in a way that makes sense for foreigners learning the language in modern times<\/a>. In particular, don&#8217;t mention <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/why-you-should-think-of-characters-in-terms-of-functional-components\/\">functional components<\/a>, which are key to understanding characters in general.<br \/>\n<a name=\"4-focus-on-radicals-from-the-very-start\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"4-focus-on-radicals-from-the-very-start\">4. Focus on radicals from the very start<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/learn-pronunciation-of-radicals\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-18587\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/radical-pronunciation-crop-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>First, if you want to make learning really confusing, mix up the words &#8220;radical&#8221; (being the part of a Chinese character used to sort it in a dictionary) and &#8220;component&#8221; (being any building block of a Chinese character). If you&#8217;re not sure what the difference is yourself, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/learn-pronunciation-of-radicals\/\">please don&#8217;t listen to this podcast episode<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The radicals might be bit arbitrary and used only in paper dictionaries, but since one of the most important skills of a student in this modern day and age of computers and smart phones is to look up characters in traditional, printed dictionaries, it&#8217;s essential that they can identify what the radical is in each character they learn from day one, including less obvious cases.<\/p>\n<p>As I said before, don&#8217;t mention functional components and invest all energy into the all-important radicals.<br \/>\n<a name=\"5-tell-the-students-that-chinese-characters-are-pictures\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"5-tell-the-students-that-chinese-characters-are-pictures\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/learning-chinese-characters-through-pictures\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7079\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/chi-174x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/chi-174x300.jpg 174w, https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/chi.jpg 399w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/strong>5. Tell the students that Chinese characters are pictures<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/learning-chinese-characters-through-pictures\/\">Saying that Chinese characters are pictures and then using cute illustrations to teach them will make characters look easier temporarily, but delay real understanding and long-term learning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you can, use pictures that aren&#8217;t related to either the actual components or the true origin of the character.\u00a0For maximum effect, cherry-pick your examples when showing how Chinese characters are pictures, and make up stuff if you have to!<\/p>\n<p>Again, avoid talking about functional components, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/phonetic-components-part-1-the-key-to-80-of-all-chinese-characters\/\">especially phonetic components<\/a>, since without these, it might take them months or even years before they figure out how a vast majority of characters work!<\/p>\n<p>This also makes sure to keep them on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/5-levels-of-understanding-chinese-characters-superficial-forms-to-deep-structure\/\">level 1 when it comes to understanding Chinese characters<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a name=\"6-only-tell-them-what-to-learn-not-how-to-learn\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"6-only-tell-them-what-to-learn-not-how-to-learn\">6. Only tell them what to learn, not how to learn<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/how-to-learn-chinese-characters-as-a-beginner\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-16134\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/yong-colour-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The students need to spend a lot of time learning characters in the beginning, so just dish out as much homework as you can, but don&#8217;t say anything about how to learn.<\/p>\n<p>Just give them a chapter reference in the textbook and say that you will test them on everything from how the characters are categorised to the names of the individual strokes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/how-to-learn-chinese-characters-as-a-beginner\/\">Avoid talking about how to learn Chinese characters as a beginner.<\/a><br \/>\n<a name=\"7-ask-students-to-write-characters-100-times-to-store-them-in-long-term-memory\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"7-ask-students-to-write-characters-100-times-to-store-them-in-long-term-memory\">7. Ask students to write characters 100 times to store them in long-term memory<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/an-introduction-to-spaced-repetition-software\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-10919\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/wordsfast-test-1-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>If you do tell them anything about how to learn, tell them that they should write the characters over and over until they remember them.<\/p>\n<p>Ignore all the science that says that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/an-introduction-to-spaced-repetition-software\/\">this type of repetition is very ineffective for long-term retention<\/a> and that looking at a model character when you write is a terrible way to commit it to long-term memory.<\/p>\n<p>Point out that this is (likely) how you learnt characters in school and that it worked for you; they just need to spend thousands of hours, and it&#8217;ll be okay.<br \/>\n<a name=\"8-when-correcting-students-handwriting-nitpick-as-much-as-possible\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"8-when-correcting-students-handwriting-nitpick-as-much-as-possible\">8. When correcting students&#8217; handwriting, nitpick as much as possible<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/handwriting-chinese-characters-the-minimum-requirements\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-9689\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/25au8u1-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The goal should be to write clean, good-looking characters from day one. The standard should be that of an educated native speaker with decent penmanship.<\/p>\n<p>Comment not only on strokes that are a bit off, but also take things like balance, poise and harmony into account. Beginners have a hard time with these concepts, so you might have to focus on writing \u70b9 (\u9ede) &#8220;dots&#8221; for a month or so before they get to anything else.<\/p>\n<p>This is more important than any functional goal, and it&#8217;s certainly worthwhile to take time from things like conversations and reading to spend on improving penmanship. If you hand back homework, red ink should cover at least 30% of the sheet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/handwriting-chinese-characters-the-minimum-requirements\/\">Make sure that beginners follow all the points mentioned here.<\/a> This will guarantee that they write correctly, even if they won&#8217;t have time to learn anything else. Correctness and aesthetics should be the focus from day one; no excuses!<br \/>\n<a name=\"9-dont-set-realistic-expectations-for-character-learning\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"9-dont-set-realistic-expectations-for-character-learning\">9. Don&#8217;t set realistic expectations for character learning<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/a-minimum-effort-approach-to-writing-chinese-characters-by-hand\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8763 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/waysofwriting-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Here you have two options, both widely used and with a long track record.<\/p>\n<p>First, you can claim that learning Chinese characters is really easy (see above about cherry-picking pictures).\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/learn-to-read-chinese-with-ease\/\">Maybe you can claim that you can read newspaper headlines with only 200 characters<\/a>\u00a0 (feel free to make up your own numbers if you wish).<\/p>\n<p>Second, you can claim the opposite, that learning Chinese characters is impossible for foreigners. Stress that there are 10,000 characters (or maybe 100,000 if you want to really scare them) and that it takes a lifetime to learn, even for native Chinese!<\/p>\n<p>Whatever you do, don&#8217;t tell the students that learning Chinese characters certainly is a challenge, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/a-minimum-effort-approach-to-writing-chinese-characters-by-hand\/\">but that it can be done in a reasonable amount of time<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a name=\"10-require-students-to-learn-to-write-every-single-spoken-word-they-encounter\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"10-require-students-to-learn-to-write-every-single-spoken-word-they-encounter\">10. In particular, be very careful with anything developed by non-native speakers, as they don&#8217;t really understand what they are doing.<\/p>\n<p>Definitely avoid recommending tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/skritter-review-boosting-your-character-learning\/\">Skritter<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hackingchinese.com\/pleco\">Pleco<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingchinese.com\/review-the-outlier-linguistics-dictionary-of-chinese-characters-with-discount-code\/\">Outlier Linguistics character dictionary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Be extra cautious with over-enthusiastic foreigners with heretical views on how to (not) teach Chinese characters to beginners!<br \/>\n<a name=\"conclusion-how-to-chinese-characters-to-beginners-a-12-step-approach\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"conclusion-how-to-chinese-characters-to-beginners-a-12-step-approach\">Conclusion: How to teach Chinese characters to beginners: A 12-step approach<\/h3>\n<p>Follow all this advice, and your students are guaranteed to feel frustration and angst.
