I also find a lot of new words that I want to remember well to be able to read more and more, so I’m going to focus on that words, and the ones I’m encountering these days, now that I add reading texts to my routine.
I hope that 30 min of anki, after or before 15 min of reading, was enough to maintain the habbit during these two crazy-at-job months. That’s 11 hours in total.

Very new learner, have been doing Hello Chinese every day and occasionally Skritter but don’t have much more time to commit at this phase of life. Love it though and want to study more intensively at some point.

Took two years of Chinese at UC Berkeley over 40 years ago, but has forgotten most of it. Last year I decided to take it up again. I’m doing about 30 min of Skritter each day. I’ve worked my way through the HSK 1-3 decks and some other decks that interested me. I’m trying to every day clear my due cards (usually about 50), and also add at least 3 cards from the HSK4 deck. I’m also using Du Chinese and try to clear my flashcard list there, too, every day.

At the beginning, I was unsure about whether I wanted to just use regular flashcards in Pleco or Anki, but eventually I decided to use Skritter instead. On one hand I don’t need to know how to write by hand. On the other hand I do feel that using Skritter help me learn the characters better. What I have ended up doing, is to “cheat” freely in Skritter. First of all, I swipe right to read the hints. If I still am not sure, I just make a “generic” stroke on the upper left, which often results in Skritter giving me the first stroke, which usually helps me indentify the radical. Through this “dialogue” with Skritter, I often end up writing a characters that I only barely remembered. Since my goal is not to learn to write by hand, but just to remember the characters more actively than just looking at a static flash card, I feel that this kind of “cheating” is no problem, and actually helps me achieve the goal of remembering how to read the characters.

I have also set up the Du Chinese to Skritter link, which created a wonderful synergy between two great apps.

My plan is use Skritter HSK 2 vocabulary. This deck has sperated vocabulary packages by 15 or 20 words and phrases. One by one I will examine each word and then I will put them all in the DeepSeek AI. Then I will ask the AI to prepare exercises like translating and creating sentences. On the side of AI there is still a lot to be desired, but since it’s so accesbile and for free it is really the only option. I think by the end of the month, I might know around 200 new characters.

Late to comment here but super happy to have finally accomplished my goal set for a Hacking Chinese challenge. Might be one of the most consistent streaks of progress I’ve made, so thanks Olle and everyone for participating. Still time to go, but just wanted to comment as I’ve just reached my 20 hour goal today. 大家加油!

That sounds reasonable! Trying to keep flashcards and pure vocabulary learning below a certain ceiling is also sensible. Another thing I try to do when I want to work with vocabulary but don’t want to use flashcards (particularly when I want to avoid the increase in flashcards that follows a binge) is to study vocabulary in other ways. This could include etymology, character origins, looking up related words/characters, creating mnemonics, and much more. These activities are all helpful and more interesting than flashcards, and they don’t lead to a hangover either. 🙂

I’m being gentle with my in the goal setting, because I don’t want flashcards to consume all the time I have available to study, but I also want my get a solid grasp on the basics so that I can feel comfortable adding more fun vocabulary.
