A question would be, I listen to a lot of material and recognize most vocab but sometimes still don’t understand what is still being said, does that make sense? Do I just need more practice, or do I need to switch up my listening material?

Rhinospike already has lots of Mandarin recordings with transcripts, some of which are appropriate for beginners. One can also make requests for transcripts.
