When it comes to music, memorising longer passages of Chinese is easy compared to written poetry or other forms of text, and if you like the music, it can be both enjoyable and relaxing to boot! I have been able to remember many words, phrases and collocations in Chinese many times because of the songs they appear in. If you like 一无所有 by 崔健, you’re extremely unlikely to forget this chéngyǔ ever again. Be mindful that music is an art form, so just like in poetry, language can sometimes be deliberately non-standard. I’ve written more about learning Chinese through music here: Why learning Chinese through music is underrated […]

Hi Sara! I have been teaching my children Chinese and wrote a post about our favorite Chinese children’s songs. Here is the link to the article https://chalkacademy.com/favorite-chinese-songs-kids/ (Ollie, hope it’s okay to share here!) 🙂

So, yes, you have to try a bit harder, but you can even found something as unlikely as jazz in Chinese:

两只老虎 is another popular kids song, to the tune of Frere Jacques. There’s a whole album called “Little Dragon Tales: Chinese Children’s Songs” you should check out.

I am learning chinese since about three years and I am short of HSK 3. I just want to share with you my experience with chinese songs and their ability to put me in the right mood to be open for learning. While I was studying in Harbin I sang every morning for the first 15 minutes a few chinese songs. I enjoyed it very much and it was good start for my one to one class. Wishing all of you happy learning and 进步。
再见, Billy
