Of course, you don’t have to limit yourself to realistic scenarios you might encounter in the near future. Role-playing is a great way to expand your horizons! […]

Cool! I’d also be interested in hearing more about your experience. Care to share?

This is of course the problem. Real tabletop role-playing requires some mean language skills to flow smoothly. I even find it challenging in English (which, for the record, isn’t my native language). The number of people who are reasonable game masters and good mandarin speakers should be very, very low indeed. However, I think it’s possible to play simpler games and more action focused storytelling even with limited language skills.

You’d need a leader with pretty excellent Mandarin, but what better way to explore the myriad of situations you may never be in in real life than by playing an RPG? That is after all what makes RPG’s so much fun. Love the relation between the two activities you drew.

Your mentioning how you never complain about your food struck a bit of a chord with me. I’ve found in my time in Zhengzhou that any time I need to get terse, I simply have no idea how to do so or what to say. Not so handy when you need to complain about poor service, etc. but it’s hardly a bad thing to not be able to be confrontational, I guess.

This is a great idea particularly as you approach or reach advanced levels.

Joseph, how advanced were you when you participated in Beijing Improv?
