There are of course several factors. First, I enjoy writing about these things and think that I can make valuable contributions by doing so. Without that, it would be impossible. However, I do this for a living (partly at least), so I also do it because I need to pay rent, bills and food. Mundane, but true. 🙂

That’s a lot of high-quality content, so I imagine there must have been some pretty strong motivation behind it.

Hi Chris,

Glad you find the blog interesting/useful! Regarding your first question, teaching in Sweden requires a licence, which requires credits and experience in the Swedish system, so no degree from abroad will be sufficient on its own. However, it’s often possible to convert degrees and credits, and then apply for a licence. However, since I have enough credits in Sweden already, I have never really needed to do this. Regarding your second question, I haven’s seen any such research, but I haven’t been looking for it either. It might be worthwhile to start by looking at research on non-native teachers in general first.

Best wishes,

Olle

I discovered Hacking Chinese last year and it is fantastic resource, one I wish I had when I first started learning Chinese. Your second to last paragraph should be a mantra for every student who embarks on the journey of learning Chinese as an adult. When I first started learning Chinese in Qingdao I was very frustrating by the teaching methods. Your article about what a student won’t get from learning in the classroom summarized my experience perfectly.
I’d like to ask you two questions. First, is your degree from Taiwan recognized by schools and other institutions in Sweden. In the United States degrees from China are not recognized but I am not sure if degrees from Taiwan are. My second question is, do you know if there has been any research done regarding students who learn Chinese from native speakers and students who learn Chinese from non-native speakers and their ability to replicate and distinguish tones?

Best wishes,

Chris Coulouris

PS- When I go back to the States your book will be my first Amazon purchase!
