However, I can see 2 other options (not only for Chinese language):
1. Create an arcade game, which would be attractive on its own (for example: Prince of Persia), but in the moment when player use dexterity he/she is asked a question about some Chinese word and correct answer determines whether the characters jumps over a hole, hits a guardian, etc. It could revise vocabulary in a similar way like Anki or Anymemo. The vocabulary to revise would not depend on the situation in the game, which makes it more universal, but less attractive.

2. Create an game, which involves picking and delivering things, entering places, taming or hunting animals, etc. If you want to act on something you need to name it (choose a character from 4 given or 4 pronunciations in pinyin given). You don’t need to name an object, which name you have recently chosen correctly. In this idea you learn in a context, which is much better, but the vocabulary is limited to the game world.

A couple additional points about games and language development:

– Breakout EDU has become a trend in the US, at least. Students have various language-related challenges to try to open several locks within a specific time frame. I haven’t tried it (the set up costs something, and requires a good amount of planning) but here is an article about it: https://fluencymatters.com/2017/03/breakout-edu-trending-in-ci-based-classrooms-by-kristy-placido/

– Mafia and alternative versions of it can be adapted pretty nicely to beginning Chinese language students. Some examples:
