Your brain relies on repetition and previous experiences to support incorporating new information. By sticking with the traditional stroke order, you give your brain a familiar framework for each new character, which will naturally improve retention.

Hi Eric! Your comment was really interesting to read! It’s one thing to change how we write squares, but quite another to change the way we write letters in our own names. When did you realise you had changed the way you wrote it? I probably noticed that I had changed the way I write squares many years after I actually changed, but it’s of course hard to be sure.

It would be interesting to see how Chinese and Japanese people would write the Latin alphabet in genera. This is likely to be dictated mostly by what they are taught in school (which is probably similar to what we do), but I’m sure there are people who change things up so they make more sense, just like you did.

I used to write the vertical stroke, then the three horizontal strokes from top to bottom.

However, after learning some basics of how to write Chinese characters (via Japanese), I subconsciously started to connect the vertical and bottom-most horizontal strokes into a single stroke, almost like an inverse of the second stroke of 口, and finish by drawing the other two horizontal strokes from bottom to top. I do sometimes reverse the last two strokes, but I find that the former way is faster to write, and tend to do that more often.

There is a radical in Japanese that is a better match for what I’m describing, but I’m not familiar enough with Chinese yet to know whether it exists there as well. The only example I can think of at the moment is 直, which Japanese seems to have “simplified.”

Anyway, I apologize for the long response to a two year old comment, but I thought it was an interesting subject.

Both the conditions need to be met to be truly unique! I wrote:

I don’t think I’ve seen anybody write capital “E” with a vertical stroke and then the three horizontal strokes starting from the bottom.

I think the vertical stroke first makes sense and I assume many people do that, as it doesn’t violate any fundamental principles. Writing it from the bottom up or writing the three horizontal strokes from bottom up would be very unique though!

I never realized how unique i was.
