Yes, good point! I feel I missed a good teaching opportunity here, so thanks for pointing it out! I’ll see if I can add a note to it in the article itself. I didn’t want to go into prosody too much because it gets complicated very quickly, but your example would have been a simple way to illustrate the effect.

Just wanted to point out that question particles like 吗 and 么 are also exceptions because they are usually pronounced high, even when preceeded by a high tone: 什么?忙吗?Most likely influened by the nature of prosody in questions.
